Marriage equality NOW THEN!

This is a story about Mildred & Richard who had their marriage defined as illegal in 1958.
They had married in Washington D.C. and went back to their home in a state where their marriage was not only unrecognized, it was illegal. This prompted a long legal battle which went all the way to the supreme court. Finally in 1967, the courts ruled in their favor and the laws that opposed their love were eventually overturned.
While the case was pending, in 1965, Mildred was quoted as saying “We loved each other and got married. We are not marrying the state. The law should allow a person to marry anyone he wants.”.
Their story is so very relevant to couples everywhere that face the same struggle. History does indeed repeat itself. Keep up the fight, eventually the prejudices that try to get between couples will fall just as they did in 1967.
